22 Jul A Family in the Neighborhood
Jenni’s husband walked out on their family last year. Five months pregnant, Jenni had to face the reality that she was now a single mother to her toddler, Joey as well as the baby that was on their way. As an only child who had lost her mom to cancer a few years ago, Jenni had little option but to face this season of life alone. She was excited for the arrival of her baby girl, but also afraid. She was especially anxious about who would watch her son while she gave birth.
As her due date grew closer, Jenni reached out to Safe Families to see if there was a family who might host her son for a week while the new baby arrived. Safe Families connected Jenni with the Harrison’s, a retired couple and their adult daughter, who were very excited to host. They met several times, getting to know Jenni and Joey and they really hit it off! When it came time for Jenni to give birth, the Harrison’s were there not only to watch Joey but also to support Jenni as she brought her daughter home from the hospital.
The Harrison’s are now like “grandparents” to Joey, having him over a weekend each month and inviting the whole family over for Holidays. Safe Families was able to support this mom in a time of crisis, and now Jenni and her kids have been blessed with an extended family. It was only one child, for one week, but their lives will be changed forever.
